Porn is boring.

-GASM is not.

Alice Arcangeli – The mind (and the heart) behind ‑GASM

Last week we published an Instagram survey to ask our followers which were the creative minds they would have liked to see featured in our blog.

We had a streak of amazing mentions, many of which we already got in contact with to score interviews, and we’re forever grateful to our followers for letting us discover so many incredible artists 🙏

Among those, our community asked us to feature… well, -GASM.

And since we just launched our new website, we decided it was worth it to give away a little bit more information about our founder.

So here we go!

Who’s behind -GASM?

I’m 27 years old, I’m from Catania and I’m based in Milan.

I currently work in a Creative Agency and I have to say I’ve always been fond of eroticism.

I started studying it with an academic point of view, while I was studying Cinema and Communication at the university.

During my studies I met a professor who gave a lot of space to erotica in Cinema and art in general. He made me understand there’s nothing to be ashamed of and it’s a topic with huge depth that’s worth looking into.

That’s why I decided to write a thesis with him, elaborating on eroticism in the movies of the director Gaspar Noé.

After that I kept dealing with media thanks to my job, learning a lot of digital marketing. I also had a lot of ideas concerning personal projects I could launch, but nothing definite.

At some point I got asked: “What’s something you could talk about indefinitely, and deal with every day for years, and never get bored?” and my answer was clear: erotica.

From that moment I knew I had to do something dealing with eroticism.

And that’s how -GASM was born.

It started as an Instagram profile collecting photos that were resonating with the “philosophy of erotica” I had in mind.
Basically what you can read in the Manifesto 😊

How would you define eroticism and what role does it hold in your life?

Eroticism is projection.

Eroticism is tension.

Eroticism is waiting for something to happen.

There’s common attraction towards something that still hasn’t happened, but it’s real, it’s inside you, and it’s coming. It’s the essence of desire.

It’s potentially everywhere, even into daily things, since it inhabits everyone’s imagination.
So anything might have eroticism in it.

How did your passion from Erotica was born?

I wouldn’t know how.

It’s something I feel has always been present since I’ve been a child.

In my parent’s house there were a lot of nude pictures and Toulouse Lautrec pictures. When they told me he used to go in brothels and create art out of the prostitutes she met, that story struck me. It made those images even more powerful.

In general I think I always felt some sort of fascination towards eroticism, and it’s the only topic I’ve never grow tired of (and I often suffer of boredom 😛)

I even thought It might have been the same for everyone, for who doesn’t like excitement? But then I realized it’s not as important for other people.

Since I discovered that feeling of anticipation, excitement, tension, I’ve always looked for it in things.

That’s when I made a choice. I decided to turn it into something tangible, and why not, a job.

What is the kind of person you created -GASM for?

The claim of -GASM recites: “Porn is boring, -GASM is not”

I believe the -GASM reader archetype is someone who’s bored and overwhelmed from the explicitness of mainstream adult media and porn.

Someone who needs something that goes deeper. Something that has an artistic value and that requires imagination to be processed.

I usually visualize -GASM readers as females, even though the project is totally inclusive towards any gender.

How do you select content, projects or creatives to be featured within -GASM?

I have very strict criteria.
They are kind of similar to the ones I’ve been using to curate content on the Instagram profile @gasmorgasm.

I would say they have to fit with these 3 points:

  1. They shall not be explicit, but rather suggestive
  2. They shall have artistic value
  3. They shall be aesthetically pleasant

Of course all those variables might be entirely subjective.

But I guess that’s part of the game.

Even if I don’t consider myself a content creator such as the awesome people we interview and spotlight here on -GASM website, in some way I still imprint part of my personality on the message sent by -GASM.

What were major learnings in managing an online project about erotica?

If I had to give advice to someone who’s just starting out, the first thing I would say is: “prepare to be frustrated”

Dealing with erotica (and adult content in general) should not be underestimated. It’s not the same as dealing with any other topic.

You often struggle with the tremendous inconsistency of today’s digital companies.

Before the launch of this website, we set up a pre-launch landing page. Basically we announced “-GASM is coming” (no pun intended) and offered a bonus in exchange for the visitor’s email contact.
It was a link to a Google Drive folder filled with various giga bytes of free content on how to improve sex life.

After a few leads, we receive an email from the newsletter service we were using at the time:

mailchimp notification to gasm admins of terminated service

And boom, nothing working anymore.

Again, the same happened with Instagram.

We started our first account during August 2018, following the same content guidelines we are following with the new one.

Yet, after a couple of months, and a couple thousands followers later, we got banned.

The reason? Unfortunately, I have no idea. Because that’s how Instagram works.

Maybe someone reported us even though we tag every single ph and model involved in the pictures we re-purpose.

Maybe someone reported us because he was offended by us non answering via DM (pretty tough finding the proper answer to a dick pic or to an harassment message)

Maybe someone reported us because one of the images had an hint of a nipple where there shouldn’t have been.

But the reality of the thing is that there’s nothing we could do.
I almost gave up at the time. I was angry.

But that anger turned out as new energy fueling the rebirth of -GASM on Instagram.
We grew even faster than before, we became more focused on cutting out the unnecessary and more careful in dealing with people in the DM.

(quick tip: if you’re dealing with weirdos, just block them. Don’t give them the chance to report you even if there’s no reason. Instagram doesn’t care about real reasons and you don’t won’t to risk getting banned)

How do you see -GASM in 3 years?

In 3 years I would like -GASM to be a recognized authority for anyone looking for something more in adult media.

Maybe that same “more” I was looking for at the time.

Basically the go-to-place for those erotica projects that are sometimes too difficult to discover, since they run a non-mainstream path, but on the other hand have a lot of value to give.

I’m also working hard to make -GASM much more than a simple blog. We started online because it’s the fastest way to gain momentum and build a following, but I would like to bring from online to offline.

Organizing exhibitions, meetups, events.

My vision is to gather a community of people active in sharing their artistic vision on the topic, not just followers.

1 real person is worth more than 10.000 followers : )

Sometimes I get messages saying like “Your pics always make my day” and that’s when I feel I’m closer to my goal.
